-That story arose straight from the sand and then swept the sky and landed in the sea where it compressed into a pearl that still lives somewhere beyond the confines of our gaze.
In time, people forget about it.
Really, it started with the black flood. We fond it and it changed our lives. The pearl that people were looking for was no longer relevant, because now we had the black flood, and flocks and flocks from all over the globe began to make their way here upon the invitation of the unifying king whose imagined imagination still is the front face of this ship we are using.
-It's been a lifetime since we saw the sea. The thing about the black flood is that it covers everything, so then you just can't see what's underneath it anymore. And that happens when you try to go in as well. Inside the black. You can no longer see what's above you. It happened to my son, Ahmed. He was doing just fine, learning how to navigate in the black. But he said he wanted more. That there was something hidden underneath. So then he took a dive and he just disappeared for a while. When he came back, he said that he wanted to look for pearls. The pearls are beautiful, he said. I tried to convince him to stop pursuing it, but he didn't, and now he's gone. I know he's alive, but he isn't coming back. Pearls are beautiful, but they are soft, softer than the black flood itself. They are fragile. But they are so beautiful. They have the power to open the light in a person's mind through their sheer beauty. And that's why I know that Ahmed never actually saw a pearl. It must have been a fake. A flicker in the dark. These flickers are real, but they are dangerous. They compel humans to seek out for them, but they are floating inside the black. And once you go inside the black, you can't see behind you anymore...
-The magic of the black flood was not only in all it gave us here, but the black also stretched out its links to every other place in the world. By the vision of our great unifying hero we always seek to share our wealth and to collaborate with other peoples. And yes, there are many collaborations related to the black and the things that it's created, but what I'm interested in is their pearls. So many different sizes and colors and shapes and qualities. You see, pearls by themselves are entirely useless. They're just a pretty thing, and that's it. But pearls have more value assigned to them than their plain practical value, you see. Having pearls makes people happy. They constitute an essential part of what we often call "culture," and it makes people happy to have that, so we have to build it. We have to build a culture. Yeah, after the black flood you can't find pearls here anymore, so other people bring them, from other parts of the world. We make sure that they are treated with prime care though. Because after all, that is what we strive for in this place: to be so welcoming that all will be able to shine in here.
-Yes, I guess you could say that's my job. I make pearls. I think that it's a very misunderstood profession. You know, it's very difficult, very time-consuming. But it is so rewarding. You just don't know it until you show it to other people. The pride and joy that comes from making them, but also the closeness that others feel when they know the one who made the pearl. They bring people closer than anything else. The light reflects off of them and warms up the room and there's just nothing else that's like it. The pearl is really a space for dialogue. That's why they are so important. Without pearls we become disconnected, and disconnected we cannot survive.
